Tips in Cooking Rice

How to Avoid Having a Rocklike (Hard) Leftover Rice?

The standard ratio of rice to water when cooking is 1:1 (1 cup rice grains is to 1 cup of water). If you prefer a more soft cooked rice, try to add 1 more cup of water. So for 3 cups of rice, so you should mix in 4 cups of water instead of the usual 3 cups.

So that if ever you cannot consume all the rice you cooked in one setting, it will still be soft on your next meal, making it still palatable.

Yellow Bag vs White Bag in Rice Packing

You probably have seen in my rice price list the terms 'yellow bag' and 'white bag.' The color of the bag actually indicates the percentage of broken rice it has. 'Yellow bag' means it has 5% broken rice, while 'white bag' means 25% broken rice. Thus, if you notice, 'yellow bag' is more expensive than 'white bag.'

Chinita Broken Rice (Below P25/kg)

Php 1,180.00 (P23.60/kg)

This has the lowest price among the rice we distributed now for the fact that it is mostly broken rice. But broke rice does not necessarily mean being of low quality. Because they may actually come from Ganador, Sinandomeng, or other good quality rice varieties, only their grains are broken. In other words, they may not look pretty but they are still delicious.

As the saying goes, do not judge a rice based on its length.

Honey Rice (Yellow Bag)

Php 1,400.00 (P28.00/kg)

This a locally produced rice. Its yellow bag packing has a 5% broken rice.

Peacock Rice

Php 1,400.00 (P28.00/kg)

This is an imported rice.

Ferrari (Yellow Bag)

Php 1,400.00 (P28.00/kg)

This is an imported rice. It has a 5% broken rice. The 'yellow' in yellow bag means that it has 5% broken rice.

Liberty Rice

 P1,500.00 (P30/kg)
This is an imported rice. But nevertheless, it is of good quality because, as you see it in the above picture, it has long grains.

PAG-ASA Rice

Php 1,540.00 (P30.8/kg)

This is a locally produced rice.

White Rose Rice

Php 1,650.00 (P33.00/kg)

It is a locally produced rice.

Savory Rice (Comparable to Ivory Rice)

Php 1,660.00 (P33.20/kg)

This is known to be more or less similar to Ivory Rice. If you can see it from the picture, it has also long grains. It is a locally produced rice.

New Horizon Rice

50 kilos  Php 1,650.00 (P33.00/kg)
25 kilos  Php    830.00 (P33.20/kg)

This is a locally grown and produced rice. A lot would say that locally produced rice tastes better than the imported ones.

Lion Ivory & A Plus (Alternative to Ganador Rice)

Lion Ivory and A Plus are rice brands that are comparable to Ganador in quality, taste, and texture. And, I am saying this based on experience.

At home, I am very particular with cooked rice texture. There are rice when after cooked they are too bagtok (hard), too dry and 'bungkag' (loose), or too 'basa' and 'lata' -- texture wise, they just do not feel that good in our mouth. That's why we preferred Ganador, it has the right texture even if it's already 'bahaw' (leftover/stale), it will not become 'gahi' and 'bagtok' (hard). Even it is already 'bahaw,' it is still soft but not 'lata.'

Lion Ivory and A Plus texture are comparable, or actually just similar to Ganador rice. But at a lower price. There might be slight differences in the length of grains, and the way they smell but I'd say they are no longer noticeable. They can be considered a good and more affordable alternative to Ganador rice.

Lion Ivory
50 kilos  Php 1,685.00 (P33.70/kg)
25 kilos  Php    848.00 (P33.92/kg)

A Plus
50 kilos  Php 1,660.00 (P33.20/kg)
25 kilos  Php    835.00 (P33.40/kg)

Ganador Rice

Ganador
50 kilos   Php 1,880.00 (P37.60/kg)
25 kilos   Php    950.00 (P38.00/kg)

Filipino consumers find 'long grain' as a good quality rice. That is why Ganador rice is considered to be one of the 'good' rice variety because of of its long grains. As expected, its price is higher compared to other rice varieties.

Ganador is a locally grown and produced in Nueva Ecija. But it is already a hybrid rice classified as IR64 rice, which mean it is genetically mutated to produce a very good quality of grains in a specific environment/weather. IR64 is the most widely grown rice variety in the tropics like Philippines. For more information about IR64, please click here.

Packed Ganador Rice

5-Kilo Sack -- P198.00
10-Kilo Sack -- P395.00

At groceries and malls, the price of 5-kilo sack of Ganador rice is usually priced at more or less P220. In local markets (merkado), the per kilo is usually more than P40 pesos.

Our price is already lower compared to the standard selling price in the local markets.

This is good for trypical home use. If you have a small sari-sari store, this is also ideal product to sell because you no longer have to repack. You can save time and money since you no longer need to buy plastics and spend some time repacking. Plus it looks presentable.
